Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
Dawanna Jones: I am Dawanna Jones, a dynamic individual proud to call Beaumont, Texas home. I completed my education in local institutions, earning my associate’s degree in Management Development from Lamar Institute of Technology. My academic journey continued as I obtained a bachelor’s degree in business and later a master’s degree in Educational Technology from Lamar University. Additionally, I hold a master’s degree in Public Administration from Arkansas State University.
My passion lies in assisting others in achieving their personal and professional aspirations, which led me to dedicate 15 years of my career as a high school business and financial educator. During this time, I had the opportunity to motivate, inspire, and educate students about financial literacy and entrepreneurship. My fervor for developing leaders and individuals extends to various ventures I pursue.
I am a versatile entrepreneur, having founded multiple small businesses, including craft ventures, financial consulting, and educational services. I take pride in being the founder and President of Black Business Professionals of Southeast Texas, where I am committed to fostering a strong business community. My leadership efforts have been recognized, including being named a young leader to watch by the 100+ Black Women Coalition and receiving the title of Woman of Integrity from the Better Business Bureau.
Outside my professional endeavors, my faith plays a significant role in my life, and I am an active member of my church, dedicating my time to serving the Lord. I engage with my community by serving on boards and involved in various organizations, including the Lamar University Alumni board. My commitment to lifelong learning is evident through my participation in programs like, Leadership Beaumont and the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce Mentor Program. In my leisure time, I indulge in my hobbies, which include crafting, cooking, and outdoor activities. These activities bring balance to my life and allow me to continue pursuing my passions with enthusiasm and dedication.

If you have a business, could you describe it and how you started it?
Dawanna Jones: My businesses were founded with purpose, passion, and a strategic approach. Senoj Professional Business Services, a business consulting firm, was established to support aspiring business owners who lacked understanding about starting a business. My motivation stemmed from my love for assisting others guiding them based on my own knowledge and experience.
The creation of Black Business Professionals of Southeast Texas, a Texas nonprofit organization, was inspired by a divine calling and my desire to give back to my community. My passion for supporting Black business owners and professionals, I felt a conviction to establish a platform that celebrated their contributions, showcasing them as inspirations and changemakers in our community.
Senoj Photoz emerged from my deep-rooted passion for photography, a love that blossomed during my teenage years. I strongly believe in the power of photographs to preserve memories; they serve as timeless reminders of joyous moments and significant periods in our lives. Whether capturing natural beauty or creating cherished memories for individuals, my enthusiasm for photography continues to drive this business.
My entrepreneurial journey began with an errand service, born from my innate desire to assist others. Additionally, my craft business took shape due to my passion for crafting. Each of these ventures was fueled by a combination of my passions and a commitment to making a positive impact on others' lives.

What challenges have you faced as a woman in your field, and how have you overcome them?
Dawanna Jones: In my experience, I have encountered challenges as a woman in my field, particularly the unfortunate reality in certain situations, women not treated as equals. Even in 2023, as we approach 2024, some men still believe they are superior simply because of their gender. This mindset has translated into the proven fact that men generally earn higher salaries than women, making me feel the need to work harder than my male counterparts to achieve a higher salary and rank.
However, I find solace and inspiration in the progress made by women who have paved the way for others like me. Witnessing women who share my background and CEO roles, successfully running companies, and serving as inspirations gives me hope. Seeing women excel in traditionally male-dominated positions, such as refinery plant managers, is a reminder that I can achieve such heights. I firmly believe that other women are not my competition; they are allies helping me overcome the challenges of being a career woman.

What accomplishments are you most proud of since being featured in Empowering Boss Life magazine?
Dawanna Jones: Since my appearance in Empowering Boss Life magazine in 2020, I've reached significant milestones. In March 2022, I was honored as a young leader to watch by the 100+ Black Women Coalition, and in October 2022, I was recognized as a Woman of Integrity by the Better Business Bureau. These recognitions are meaningful because I don't actively seek accolades; my focus is helping others and making a difference wherever I can. I prefer to work behind the scenes, volunteering and serving others without being in the spotlight. So, it was unexpected and humbling to discover that others were observing my efforts and found them worthy of recognition. Additionally, I have the privilege of being invited as a guest speaker at several events, an opportunity I value and am proud of. It's truly humbling that people appreciate my words and insights enough to consider them valuable.

How have you continued to empower and mentor other women in your industry?
Dawanna Jones: I have continued to empower and mentor other women in my industry by embodying my belief in making a difference in the lives of others. Through every interaction, including casual conversations, I aim to say something impactful that resonates with them. Over the past few years, I have actively participated in panels and events where the audience consisted of women. During these engagements, I have dedicated myself to offering encouragement and unwavering support, urging them to pursue their dreams while emphasizing the importance of mental health and self-care. My commitment to giving back and supporting women remains steadfast, regardless of their career status, as I firmly believe in fostering a supportive community for all women in the industry.

Could you share an impactful story or experience that has shaped your journey and outlook on life?
Dawanna Jones: The impactful experience that has shaped my journey and outlook on life occurred when I was in a position of comfort and complacency. Despite a lingering sense that there was more to my life's purpose, I hesitated to make a change. Then, a disruptive situation emerged, shattering my comfort and triggering frustration and confusion. Eventually, I felt compelled to leave my long-held position, a decision that emotionally charged after 15 years.
Following that period, my faith and patience underwent significant trials. There were moments of anger and questioning, yet I remained faithful. Despite numerous setbacks and disappointments in my job search, I persisted, trusting that there was a divine plan at play.
During this period, I learned a profound truth: everything that happens isn't meant to hurt us but can serve as a catalyst, nudging us toward the path aligned with our destiny. Through unwavering faith, I persevered, and in due an perfect opportunity that resonated with my heart's desires manifested unexpectedly. It was an answer to prayers I hadn't even voiced.
This experience fortified my belief in God's timing and plan. It strengthened my faith and reaffirmed my outlook on life. Now, I stand as a testament to the power of prayer, trust, and belief. I share this story to encourage others, assuring them that no matter the challenges faced, maintaining faith and trust in God's plan will eventually lead to one's purpose.

How has your life and career evolved since being featured in Empowering Boss Life magazine?
Dawanna Jones: Since my feature in Empowering Boss Life magazine, my life and career have undergone changes. Before this change, I served as a full- time high school business and finance instructor while concurrently overseeing multiple small businesses and a nonprofit organization. However, I have now transitioned away from my role as a high school instructor and have taken up a new position that offers me greater flexibility. This newfound flexibility allows me to contribute to children's causes. Currently, I teach part-time in the afternoons and online, enabling me to harmonize my dedication to teaching with my other responsibilities. My new role permits me to engage in more community service work that previously limited me due to my full-time teaching responsibilities. Thanks to this change, I now have the freedom to structure my workday according to my priorities, and this newfound freedom has significantly increased my happiness. People in my circle have observed the difference, and I've received numerous comments on my increased happiness. I am genuinely enjoying my career in this new capacity.

Dawanna Jones: After being featured in Empowering Boss Life magazine, I had an epiphany that life is too short to become complacent. This realization has urged me to take more risks and actively pursue my goals. Though patience has been a challenge, I understand its value. As it eventually leads to the desired outcomes. Additionally, I have learned that prioritizing my needs is essential, even if it means disappointing others. Despite my inclination to put others first, I have realized that I deserve happiness and blessings just as much as anyone else and that God has a purpose for me.
Regarding my leadership style, I firmly believe in nurturing and developing others. I promote a hands-off approach, allowing those under my guidance to flourish by honing their skills. This approach stems from my conviction that empowering others is key to effective leadership, and it reflects my commitment to helping individuals reach their full potential. By doing so, I believe that I can make a positive impact on individuals and the organizations.

Dawanna Jones: I have continued to challenge myself and grow as a leader by actively seeking ways to step outside my comfort zone. My passion for reading and learning new things has been instrumental in this journey, as I believe that knowledge fuels growth. When faced with opportunities that I might have avoided in the past, particularly leadership roles, I now embrace them wholeheartedly. I firmly believe you never truly understand your capabilities until you challenge yourself. Therefore, I consistently search for and accept opportunities that push my boundaries, allowing me to evolve and develop as a leader.

Dawanna Jones: To me, being an empowering boss means prioritizing the empowerment of others above all else. In today's world, it's crucial to recognize that everyone is facing their own challenges. A gentle smile or a thoughtful gesture possesses the remarkable ability to influence someone's life. I believe in the power of dedicated efforts to support and uplift others. I see it as a divine calling to be of service, a source of inspiration. In my daily interactions, I strive to lift people's spirits, aiming to be a beacon of positivity and encouragement. My passion lies in making a difference and inspiring young women to believe in their potential, fostering a belief that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

How do you prioritize self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance? what tips can you offer other busy women?
Dawanna Jones: self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for my mental well- being. I rely on organized schedules, where everything, including my "me time," is carefully planned and recorded. I believe other busy women can benefit from this approach. Creating a daily routine while ensuring consistent sleep patterns is vital. Exercise is a non-negotiable part of my day as it impacts my mental and physical health. I carve out specific time slots in the morning and evening dedicated solely to self-reflection, relaxation, journaling, meditation, and focusing on my personal growth.
One advice I offer is to set clear boundaries, especially at the end of the day. I firmly adhere to an end-of-day time, beyond which I don't engage in work-related calls or tasks until the next business day. This boundary ensures I have uninterrupted time for myself and my loved ones. While financial success is important, cherishing moments with family and friends is invaluable. Lastly, nurturing a spiritual connection is essential; dedicating time to my faith allows me to find strength and balance amidst life's demands.

How do you stay motivated and inspired, even in the face of adversity?
Dawanna Jones: My biggest motivation stems from the awareness that life is incredibly fleeting. None of us knows when our last day will arrive. I firmly believe that each of us has a purpose in this world and driven by the fear of leaving this life unfulfilled. Despite the challenges surrounding us, observing the extraordinary resilience of women and youth inspires me. Witnessing women shatter barriers and create paths in male-dominated fields invigorates my spirit. Even amidst adversity, their achievements fuel my determination. Every morning I wake up, I see a new chance to make a difference and be extraordinary, and that prospect keeps me motivated and inspired.

What new projects or initiatives are you currently working on?
Dawanna Jones: Currently, my main focus is on personal growth and self-improvement. I consider myself the biggest project I am working on. I am dedicated to becoming the best version of myself by being strategic in my decisions and choices. I am mindful of what I commit to and how I spend my time. Additionally, I am exploring various avenues to contribute positively to my community and the lives of those around me.

What are your future goals and aspirations, both personally and professionally?
Dawanna Jones: Both my personal and professional ambitions are intertwined, and my future goals and aspirations reflect this connection. Regarding my professional goals, I am motivated to grow my business to the extent where I aim to decrease my direct participation in the day-to- day operations of my endeavors. I am passionate about reaching a position where I can proudly become the first Black woman to hold that role, breaking barriers and paving the way for others. In addition to professional success, financial stability is crucial to achieving my personal aspirations. I aspire to a level of financial security where I can fulfill my dreams of becoming a philanthropist and making a genuine difference in the lives of others. Ultimately, I aim to leave a lasting legacy, ensuring that I fulfill the purpose God has planned for me and make a meaningful impact before I leave this world. I can achieve my personal and professional goals with hard work and dedication . And make a difference in the world.

What changes or advancements do you hope to see for women in your industry in the next 5-10 years?
Dawanna Jones: In the next 5-10 years, I am optimistic about witnessing significant advancements in gender equality within my industry. I eagerly anticipate a future where the phrase "the first woman to" in specific positions becomes obsolete, and women are equally represented at all professional levels. It is imperative that women receive equal pay for equal work, completely eliminating the gender pay gap. In order to achieve a fair and inclusive workplace, it is essential to eliminate any discrimination that may arise from women's hairstyles, taking time off for female-related issues, or fulfilling childcare responsibilities. Furthermore, I look forward to the historic moment when the United States elects its first female President, shattering yet another glass ceiling and inspiring future generations of female leaders.

Dawanna Jones: I envision a future where women in my industry are respected as valuable individuals with unique contributions to make in the workplace. I aim to further this vision by continuously educating myself and acquiring experience. Every day, I am dedicated to showing up, being focused, and giving my best to my job. Additionally, I am constantly exploring innovative ideas that bring changes to the workplace. I firmly believe that through creativity and innovation, we can create opportunities that demonstrate significance of women in the workplace.

What advice would you give to women who are just starting out in your industry?
Dawanna Jones: I would advise women entering our industry to embrace patience and avoid being overly critical of themselves. Remember, everyone begins at the starting point. Stay observant; absorb knowledge by taking notes and learning as much as possible. Be willing to put in extra effort, but also recognize your limits and avoid overworking. Stand up for yourself – if something is wrong, speak out. Don't allow others to take advantage; setting boundaries is crucial. Additionally, prioritize your mental and physical well-being. Burnout is a genuine concern, so be mindful of your own health and don't push yourself to the point of exhaustion.
